Auto Insurance Discounts Part 2
Tuesday, 08 January 2008

We're all pretty much aware of some of the standard car insurance discounts available, but I am going to briefly list them here and follow up with some real savings you may not have heard about.

The safe auto discount. Vehicles with added safety features can save you a significant amount of money on your premiums. This includes full front-seat air bags, passive occupant restraints, and of course anti-lock brakes. What are passive occupant restraints you ask? They're those motorized seat belts that wrap around you as soon as you close the door, spilling your morning coffee, squeezing the life out of larger people, and giving us "vertically challenged" folks a rub burn on our chins. I haven't seen a vehicle with those things in a long time. Thank goodness they're not federally mandated.

Multi-car discount.

It's possible to get a discount by combining more than one vehicle on the same policy. Of course, this all depends on the actual drivers who will be added along with the additional vehicles. You wouldn't want to add a high-risk driver just to get the multi-car discount.

Multi-line discount.

This is an over-all savings by combining different types of insurance coverage with the same company. In other words, using the same insurance provider for you car , homeowners, private, health, life, or even travel insurance can bring some significant discounts. Not all carriers provide all the different coverages, but here's a list of some that do: American International Group (AIG), Allstate, Farmers Insurance Group, MetLife, American Family Insurance, Nationwide, and there are several others.

Student and education.

Most providers offer a discount for full time student with a good GPA (usually 3.0 or higher). However, some companies provide discounts for the already educated. Horace Mann Insurance offers discounts to teachers who belong to state education associations or the National Education Association (NEA). I should also not that Horace Mann is a multi-line insurance provider.

21st Century is a car insurance company which offers discounts for those with a bachelor's degree in a number of science and engineering ralated fields. If you're scientist or engineer with a good driving record, you could save 10% to 30% on the companies base rate.
